Obituary of Mary Belle MacKinnon
It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Mary Belle MacKinnon, that occurred August 27, 2015 in the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, N.S. Born in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, she was the only daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Jane (Smith) MacDougall. She attended school in Antigonish and first worked at Goodman’s Department Store, Main Street.
On July 17, 1952 Mary Belle married Donald (Roddie) MacKinnon. They moved from Antigonish to Hamilton, Ontario and then later returned to live and raised their family in Antigonish. As a young mother of three, and after caring for her own mother at home, Mary Belle returned to work at Goodman’s, then was a stay-at-home mother, raising her young family. She loved to knit, garden, dance, was a fantastic cook and a friend to all whom she befriended.
Mary Belle is survived by her only son, Daniel (Tanya) MacKinnon, Halifax, N.S.; daughters Donna (Jerome) MacGillivray, Halifax, N.S. and Karen MacIsaac (Welland, Ont.); grandchildren, Melissa MacKinnon-Hughes (Tom), Fredericton, N.B.; Pamela Sutherland (Cory), Brookfield, N.S.; Justin (Abby), Megan and Kyle MacGillivray, Halifax, N.S., Matthew and Alison MacIsaac, Welland, Ont. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Cynthia Smith, Agnes MacDougall and many nieces and nephews. Her family was her world. She was an active member of C.W.L. and Clan MacDougall. She will be missed. Her family wishes to thank the staff of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home; 3rd floor staff, St. Martha’s Hospital, and Dr. Gorman for the outstanding care they provided to Mary Belle.
She is predeceased by her husband Roddie and three brothers, Joe Smith, John H. MacDougall and Danny MacDougall.
Visitation will be 2-4 pm. and 7-9 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2015. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ninian Cathedral on Monday, August 31 at 11am. Reverend Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
