Obituary of Joseph Duncan MacDonald

MacDonald, Joseph Duncan "Joe Judique" – 89, formerly of Coady Ave Antigonish, N.S., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, January 13th, 2014 at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home. Born June 14, 1924 in Judique, he was the youngest child of the late Angus and MaryBelle (Chisholm) MacDonald. Joe had a great love and appreciation for his Scottish culture. His fluency in Gaelic and his love of Celtic music were important parts of his life. Joe loved to laugh and always had a kind word for those he met along the Main where he worked for over thirty years as a town constable. He was a dedicated volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross, the Cancer Society and the Kidney Foundation. Surviving are daughters Martha (Jane) Toronto, Anne (Bob Peters) SW Margaree, Mary (Chris Hill) Hammonds Plains, sons Hugh V (Charlotte) New Hampshire, Jody (Nancy) Purlbrook, Robert (Carolyn) Antigonish, grandchildren, Seph, Meghan, Emma, Tim, Stewart, Andrew, Jack, Luke, Mealey, Innis, Fearghus, Sadie, Broghan, Hannah, Mollie, Alexander, great grandchildren, Fionn, Otis and Ira, brother John Dan, Judique, step-daughters Barbara, Louise and Florence all of Port Colborne Ontario, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by first wife Irma MacDonald and second wife Jean MacDonald. Joe was also predeceased by brothers Alexander, Angus, Peter, Archibald, George and sisters Mary MacMaster and Margaret Preston. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Mary Gorman for her care over the years and to all staff at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home for their compassion during his stay at Cobblestone Cottage. Also, a special thank you to family friend James MacPherson for his years of music and laughter. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Thursday January 16th at MacIsaac’s Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17th in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Rev Donald MacGillivary presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
