Obituary of Christina Stringer
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the quiet and peaceful passing of Christina Stringer at Green Meadows Community Residence in Antigonish. Born in Fairmont, Antigonish County on July 21, 1924, Christina was the daughter of the late John A. and Anne Cecilia (MacDonald) MacDougall.
As a young woman she was a dedicated and valued employee for Simpson Sears in Antigonish and later in Halifax. Following her marriage, she lived in Dartmouth and became a stay-at-home mom. Christina returned to Antigonish with her daughters after the tragic and untimely death of her husband Lewis Stringer, in the 1969 Kootenay disaster off the coast of England.
Christina enjoyed travelling; she was an avid hockey, baseball and horse racing fan. She loved to be in nature and walk. Christina also loved being in the company of family and friends. Her daughters and grandsons were her greatest pride and joy.
In later years, she was a happy and contented resident of Green Meadows Community Residence. Her family extends their immense gratitude for the care and kindness given to Christina by the staff at Green Meadows. They also want to acknowledge and thank the staff on the 4th floor GAR unit at St Martha’s Regional Hospital for their loving care of their mother.
Christina is survived by her daughters Louise Stringer of Montreal, Susan (Paul) MacDonald of Springhill, Jacqueline (Mark) McCracken of Bedford and her grandsons Brandon MacDonald, Aidan McCracken and Brennan McCracken. Also surviving are her sisters Ruth Lovett of Halifax, Frances MacDougall, Jean Quirk, Florence (Kenny) Pellerin, Anne (Charlie) MacKenzie all of Antigonish; her brothers Jackie of Sudbury Ontario, Colin (Colleen) of Lower Sackville and Carroll (Agatha) of Antigonish, her sister-in-law Shirley MacDougall of Antigonish and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Lewis, her brothers Billy and Dougald, as well as her sister Della.
Visitation for Christina will be held at MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St. Antigonish, from 6-9 pm on Wednesday October 14th. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ninian’s Cathedral Thursday October 15th at 10am. Burial will be held later on Thursday in Halifax, at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, so that she may lay in peace, with her husband Lewis.
Memorial donations may be made to St Martha’s Regional Hospital or the charity of choice.
