Obituary of Andrew Benedict Chisholm
Andy passed away on October 25, 2014 at the age of 96 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Caledonia Mills on June 16, 1918 to Angus and Mary Ann (Chisholm) Chisholm, he joined the Canadian Army in 1940. After basic training in Nova Scotia he was transferred to Ontario, and then Vancouver Island where he was promoted to Sergeant as an instructor of small arms and trainer for new recruits.
From there he was transferred to duty overseas and attached to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in Belgium, and then Holland in 1944. On November 5, 1946 he married Geraldine MacMillan of Fairmont.
After returning home he started a small lumbering and trucking business and later accepted a job with the Municipal School Board as a Bus Driver and Supervisor of Transportation which he worked for 28 years. He was appointed Parish Warden for St. Andrews Parish and later as one of the first members of the New Parish Council formed by Fr. Bernard Chisholm.
He was very active in community affairs and was a member of St. Andrews Oak & Owl Club and a past Board Member of the St. Andrews Volunteer Fire Dept. Andy was always overjoyed to help his community and always ready to help anyone in need, day or night.
He is survived by sons Ben (Trish), Dagger Woods; AB (Eileen) St. Andrews; Doug (Donalda), St. Andrews; Chris (Melba), Lower South River; daughters Mary –Deen MacIsaac (Mike), New Glasgow; Donna DeYoung, Lower South River; Bernice MacIntosh (James), St. Andrews; and Jackie MacDonald (Shaun), St. Andrews.
He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Vernon, Kerry, Hillary, Kim, Andrea, Vicki, Jill, Andrew, Robin. Tammy, Sandy, Katie and Sarah; step grandson James MacDonald; sister Theresa MacDonald; and by sisters-in-law Louise Chisholm, Bernadette Chisholm and Effie Glenn.
He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine Chisholm; sister Catherine Bowles; brothers Archie Dan, John B., Billy; infant daughter Mary Ann and son in law John DeYoung.
Andy will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His greatest joy was when people came to visit him at his home and the memory of all the family gathering around the Christmas tree and being together for the usual Christmas Dinner.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Monday, October 27, in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral Mass 10:30 am Tuesday in St. Andrews Church, St. Andrews, Rev. Charles Cameron presiding. Burial in the South River Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Andrews & District Veterans Memorial Society, or the St. Andrews Oak & Owl Club.
