Mary Walsh

Obituary of Mary Walsh

It is with great love, respect and sorrow that we announce the death of our mother after 84 years.   Mom died peacefully, surrounded by family at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, NS on March 7, 2020.  Born on February 18, 1936, Mom was the oldest child of the late Mabel (MacDonald) and Arthur Brosha.  She spent her early years in Heatherton and moved on to complete studies at Nova Scotia Teachers College and STFX University.   She began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Fraser’s Grant, and went on to a long and rewarding career at St. Andrew Junior High School, teaching English, and fulfilling roles as librarian and Vice Principal for many years.   She loved her profession, her colleagues and especially the young people she taught. Mom was also very involved in the planning, building and management of St. Ninian’s Place in Antigonish, and had many happy memories from that time. She was an active community volunteer, enjoying time spent on various boards and committees, and was a life-long member of the CWL.

Mom married her husband Eugene Walsh in 1961 and together they raised three daughters on Cloverville Road, Antigonish.  They spent many happy years exploring back roads in Nova Scotia, always ready to jump in the car to “go for a drive”. They also enjoyed trips to Ireland, New England, Alberta and especially a trip to Newfoundland.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Eugene Walsh, as well as many close Walsh family members, especially James (Marie), Bernard (Marie) and Bertha (John) Dunphy who all raised their families in close proximity.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother William Arthur Brosha in infancy, brother Louis Brosha, brother-in-law Phillip Marcil, niece Audrey (Brosha) and her husband Melvin Hibbs.

She is survived by daughters Marion (Rod) MacMillan , Antigonish;  Dr. Michele (Dr. Paul) Saxon, Middleton, NS; Dr. Margaret Walsh (Brett Keeping), Ingramport, NS.  Grandchildren Ryan (Kate) MacMillan, Chezzetcook, NS; Danielle MacMillan (Kris Gaudet), Cole Harbour, NS; Liam, Caroline, and Maura Saxon (all at STFX).  Her world was considerably brightened in recent years by the arrival of her cherished great-grandchildren Lily and William MacMillan.   Also survived by siblings Lorraine (Doc) Schofield and Gen Marcil, Alberta; John (June) Brosha, Antigonish; Carroll (Jeanette) Brosha, Heatherton;  Rita(Rod)  Dove, Pictou, NS; Arthur (Charlotte) Brosha and Sylvester (Bunny) Brosha, Heatherton;  Bev (Bernie) Gilfoy, William’s Point; Claire (Joe) MacDonnell, St. Andrews;  Marian Brosha and Noella Brosha (Brenda Gould), Heatherton; and sisters-in-law Eleanor Brosha, Bayfield, and Marguerite Walsh, Montreal, as well as many nieces and nephews who were very special to her, especially nephew and long-time neighbor Barry (Anne) Walsh.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Patsy McKenna, Dr. Elizabeth Cooper, nurses and staff at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home who treated mom like cherished family, and doctors and nurses at St Martha’s Regional Hospital, especially those at the Palliative care unit where she spent her last days in comfort and love.
