Obituary of Peter Goldie
GOLDIE, Peter Cpt. (Retd)
Age 79 of Antigonish, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2016 at St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Dominion Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Campbell) Goldie.
Peter was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan (Rutherford); children, Helen, Karen (Troy) and Heather (Jonathan); grandchildren, James and Caitlin; sister, Marilyn O’Brien and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by siblings Elizabeth, Margaret Florence, Thomas James, Katherine, Helen, and Terrence.
Peter joined the Canadian Army Active Force in 1955, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (1958), commissioned under the Officer Candidate Programme and was posted to the Second Battalion The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada (1960), posted HQ Militia Area Atlantic as G3 Training, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (1973) and retiring from regular forces in 1991. After retirement from Regular Forces he was retained by Regional Operations at Maritime Command as the Canadian Ranger Captain and continued on with the Rangers as G3 Rangers at LFAA Headquarters and Adjutant of the 5TH Canadian Ranger Patrol Group until 2002.
In 1998 Peter was appointed a member of the Order of Military Merit.
Peter had many overseas postings during his career (West Germany, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt). His extra regimental employment in Canada included Staff Officer Base Defence Planning at Canadian Forces Base Halifax, Support Coordinator with the Nova Scotia International Tattoo, OC Canadian Forces Centre Sydney, Regular Support Staff Officer with the 1st Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders, Truro and Staff Officer Training at Nova Scotia District Headquarters Halifax, Nova Scotia.
During his retirement he enjoyed reading, gardening, anything outdoors, travelling and reconnecting with friends.
A memorial service will be held at MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish on June 14, 2016 at 2 pm. Rev. Gerard MacInnis presiding. Interment at a later date. Reception to follow at Peter and Susan’s home in Fairmont. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Red Cross or a charity of choice.
