I was fortunate to serve with John on the committee to establish the new Constitution of the Progressive Party of Canada under leader Jean Charest. John’s intelligence and quiet demeanour shone as he represented Nova Scotia and all Canadians as we wrote this new constitution. I remember his smile and his quiet wit. I was shocked to learn of his death, far too soon. Please accept my sincere sympathies. I will look forward to reconnecting with him in Heaven.

Dear Toni, Remi, Betty, Mary Lou, Peggy, Denise and the entire extended MacDonell family;
I was saddened to hear the news about young John's passing. Andrew MacDonald emailed me with this news.
On behalf of the Sims family, Chris, Ellen, Paul, John and Bain, please accept our deepest condolences on John's death.
From my earlier Jimtown days, I remember John as a very young fellow - tagging along behind his older sisters, playing on the beach in front of the "Priest"s Rocks, participating in "Jimtown Days", bomb fires, etc. I had moved out to Vancouver in 1980 to continue my professional career in health care, and I really didn't get the opportunity to meet John as a young adult. Based on his lovely obituary tribute, I would have enjoyed meeting this smart and energetic Jimtown "alumni" in our adult years.
John was a year younger to our youngest brother, Ron, who sadly passed away last February 2022. Our family certainly understands the impact of John's passing and the great loss that your family are going through.
The Sims family thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
fondly,
Chris Sims

Dear Toni, Remi, and MacDonell family members and friends, Sincerest sympathies to you all as you grieve the profound loss of John in your lives and those of countless others. Anytime I met John he always took time to chat about home and would never fail to ask about family: always engaging with a smile and a humorous remark. In the presence of others, I recall how he also was so quick to acknowledge another's accomplishments and achievements. He accomplished so much and provided an example to me and to so many of a life dedicated to service of community and country. May you receive the grace of healing as you mourn your loss and know that so many are sending you blessings for support and care. Fois shìorruidh do dh’Iain | Eternal rest to John.

As I think back, I think every other fond memory of my childhood was the gang at Morrison and John was always an important and integral part of those special times and occasions, particularly those birthday parties. The phrase “gird your loins” came to mind I am sure for all those parents. We were a rambunctious lot.
I truly regret having so easily lost touch over the years. Having always been by his side through school, I took for granted that someday we would find our way back to a common location and have the time to reminiscence as well as appreciate ourselves and our paths in our later years. I was able to keep track of his careers at a distance, well knowing that I was only touching the surface of his many accomplishments. I will always remember that childhood friendship, his drive, work ethic, intelligence, ambition, wit, humour and dedication to the greater good through public service. He was a man on a mission from a very young age and he achieved much, both professionally and personally. The world has lost someone who contributed so much in too short a time – Toni, Remi, Mary Lou, Betty, Peggy, and Denise and to his son Jack – I am so very sorry for your loss, Elaine Chisholm

It breaks the heart to learn of the passing of John MacDonnell. John was a longtime friend and fellow traveller and activist. I could and probably should also say mentor. Because I learned a lot from John over the years. John was one of those senior NS Tories who took me under their wings when I was attending university in Halifax some years back. While separated by some years, we have some things in common. We're both alumni of University of King's College and Dalhousie Law School. We practiced but also took time away from practice to take senior positions with great ministers in the previous Conservative Government. John served for years as PCNS President and built an army of loyal young activists wherever he went, including his time serving a Chief to Ministers like Hon. Peter MacKay. As recently as last year, I called John seeking advice on a thorny problem I was facing. I trusted John with details and information I would not trust to hardly anyone else outside my family. John never ever betrayed that trust. And he always had time for us young turks as we pushed on with the challenges in our activism and service to government ministers. John was always known for having strong political advice and a solid policy background. A grown-up voice in the room. I feel grateful for the 25 years I knew him - even since the '98 Segal Leadership campaign - and so sad that there will be no more time. To John's entire family please know you have a friend and ally and support in me. If there is anything at all I can do, any time, next week or in decades, please always feel free to ask. All our heartfelt thoughts, prayers and condolences.

Dear MacDonell family and Jack,
It was with much shock and sadness that I heard of John's recent passing. I offer my sincere condolences for his tragic and untimely loss. I first met John when he was the Chief of Staff for the Honourable Peter Mackay (the then Minister of National Defence). I immediately liked and respected him because of he was a fierce defender of the rule of law, a staunch supporter of the well-being members and veterans of the CAF and a very proud Bluenoser. Soon after I was privileged to be appointed as the Judge Advocate General of the CAF. I had many interactions with John regarding a wide variety of legal issues ranging from the armed conflict in Afghanistan, to the military justice system , to dealing with ill and injured CAF members and so on. While we often had many vigorous debates, John was always respectful, professional and his heart was always in the right place. I learned much from him, especially how to deal with the often irrational and unprincipled politics of Ottawa. John was, necessarily, a pit bull on the outside. However, inside he had a loving and generous heart. I am sure that you are now suffering through some darks days. However, I know you have so many great memories of John that will brighten any such dark moments. Please know that many people loved and respected John. While he did not wear the uniform of the CAF, he was as loyal, professional and courageous as any warrior. He will be missed. His spirit lives on. Take care.

Sending love and strength to Jack, Toni, and the whole MacDonell Family upon hearing the tragic news of John's passing.
I hold the immense pleasure of being one of John's Morrison Elementary classmates. We remain a tightly knit crew despite the passing of many decades. This news hits hard. Even in the elementary years, we instinctively knew that John was going to contribute greatly to the world, as at the age of 9 (likely younger!), he had the ability to carry on in-depth conversations about world affairs with our teachers. (To be clear, these were one-on-one, lengthy chats between John and his teacher, not chats with the whole class and our teacher!) The beautifully written obituary for John confirms not only the impact his dedication has had on Canadians, but also the heart and compassion with which it was delivered. This was the John we knew going right up through high school all together.
I will hold dear my last memory of a chance meeting with John on a Halifax street many years ago now: a big hug, a big smile, a quick catch-up, and a laugh or two. I hope that fond memories of your own will help to sustain you through your loss. Take care of each other.

First, let us all express our condolences and faithful prayers to help John’s family and friends celebrate his life.
I first met John in the King’s College Chapel though I do not recall the exact circumstance. I do recall his air of belonging, of steadfastness, of purpose.
I immediately liked these things about John. Over the years at Kings, I recall his many odd insights and commentaries around the lunch and dinner tables. I could not appreciate then, as I do now, his command of words and the diplomacy he carried himself with (when not enjoying the Ward Room).
Many will surely have stronger memories of him. What I have is a deep respect. A respect for what he pursued, what he became, and the power he wielded in pursuit of what be most ardently believed was both good and just. I have been fortunate to have held similar roles to those of John over the course of my career, and I can assure you, as a Chief of Staff HE WAS THE POWER behind the throne, as some might say.
He was a formidable guardian in an often nasty and brutish world of Canadian politics. He experienced first-hand, political extremism, polarization, and partisanship. In a sense, he was on the front lines – constantly under attack, yet holding the line, regardless of the cost he was required to pay. He lived through a period of tremendous growth in public cynicism and a lack of confidence in leading institutions – this could not have been easy for him. Still, I know he worked diligently and without much rest, to help address both immediate and strategic problems, especially those problems in formulating a new conservative ideal in Nova Scotia.
I shall always miss you, John my friend. You inspired me. You made me feel comfortable to take stronger stands on what I thought was right or wrong. You challenged me – not always with words – but with that air of conviction, of purpose, of direction. In respecting you, I learned to respect myself a little more.
The ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus said, "There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will." I believe John aimed to live by this quote, though his road was especially difficult.
For all of our sakes, we should try to live by this quote as well. As for certain, his no longer being here is something well beyond the power of our will.

Some of my earliest grade school memories include John, birthday parties and a couple of trips to Jimtown. We reconnected on Facebook a number of years ago. Only fond memories to be sure. Our condolences to Mrs. MacDonell and the entire family. Rest easy my old friend.

To Aunt Toni and family, I am so sorry for your loss. While I didn’t know John well, I will always remember his smile and the love he had for his son Jack. May he rest in peace.
