Obituary of Theresa Landry

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 21, Mary Theresa (MacDonnell) Landry, 95, was peacefully reunited with her beloved Nicky - surrounded by her loved ones, in the compassionate care of the High-Crest Sherbrooke Home for Special Care. 

Theresa was born and raised in Glenroy, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Flora (MacPherson) and Angus MacDonnell. A farm girl, Theresa learned the value of hard work at an early age. As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Theresa devoted her life to caring for her loved ones - especially Nicky and Tommy. 

For over 60 years, Theresa made Lower South River Loop a welcome haven for friends and family - where you could always count on the best produce from the garden, the most delicious raspberry jam, a cup of tea and a good chat. Like any good Scottish host, there was always food on the table and the kettle was always warm. Theresa was best known for her dry “little chirps” - served with a grin, a chuckle and a hug to smooth out the blunt honesty.

Theresa loved nothing more than being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and, in later years, her beloved great-grandchildren. She always could be counted on for cold freezies, a cup of Sunny D or a handful of jellybeans. A talented knitter, Theresa kept every member of the family rich in dishcloths, mittens and hats - eventually passing the love of her craft on to Nicky. 

She was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Parish and cherished their yearly pilgrimages to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. As an active member of the St. Andrew’s CWL and the Oak and Owl Club, Theresa could always be counted on for prayer shawls, food and comfort to anyone in need. 

Theresa could often be found tending her beautiful flowers (or supervising Nicky’s tending), going on a “little drive” to see the beautiful houses, watching the Young and the Restless, or having a game of cards with her family and friends. A talented piano player and daughter of a fiddler, Theresa was a dedicated fan of the XFM Ceilidh hour. With Nicky as her partner, in dancing and in life, you could not help but smile watching them together. 

Theresa is pre-deceased by her loving husband Nicky, son Kevin, daughters Joan Marie and Florence Michelle (in infancy), siblings Allan, Sadie (Angus), John A, Kay (Charlie), Donald (Anita) and Alex (Catherine). She is survived by her sisters Mary (late Dougald) and Joan (late Bernard), by her son Tommy, daughters Betty (George) Mills and Eileen (David) Heffernan. Nanny will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Ian (Lacey), Courtney (Adam), Andrea, Breanna, Alicia (Steve), Stephanie (Jamie), Lacey (CJ) and Nikki (Kieran). She is fondly remembered by daughter-in-law Tammy and step-grandchildren, Kerrin, Keith and Kendra. Her memory will live on in her great-grandchildren, Sadie and Ethan Landry, Noah and Tessa Burans, and Carter and Evelyn Phinney.  She is survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family members. 

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Sunday June 25 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral mass 11am Monday, June 26 in St. Andrew’s Parish Church, Rev. Dennis Lamey presiding. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to L’Arche Antigonish and High-Crest Sherbrooke Home for Special Care, or the charity of your choice. 

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the care of Drs. Steeves, Ackermann and MacLean, and the VON. The family is eternally grateful to the staff and volunteers of High-Crest Sherbrooke Home for Special Care for their compassionate care of Theresa and the family. They would also like to thank Theresa and Nicky, for showing the love and devotion we all can only dream to experience.
