Obituary of Joseph Michael Murphy

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Michael Murphy, age 88, of Lanark, Antigonish County, on January 10, 2024 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, with family by his side.

Born in Antigonish, he was the son of Patrick and Sophie (DeYoung) Murphy.

Early in life, Joe was employed with the Department Of Highways for a few of years, then for 20 years at M&M Garage then finally retired from the Antigonish District School Board in the custodial department.

He is survived by and will be missed by his wife of 56 years Lillian (Farrell); children Terry (Tammy), Mattie Settlement; Mary Ellen (Trevor), Westville; Allan (Melissa), Antigonish; Grandchildren Patrick (Robin), Jessica, Rose Marie (Charles), Christina, Fred, Austin, Emerson, Sophie and Lilly; Great Grandchildren  Thomas, Aly, Warren, Winston and Iris; Siblings Mary Jane Stribrny, Dominic and Isabell MacDonald; Brother-in-law Louie MacEachern; many nieces, nephews and close friends as well as fur grandchildren; Bolt, Monty and Miss Millie.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by, and will be reuniting with, his daughters; Karen and Joyce and son-in-law Joe MacLean; siblings; Rudolph, William Dominic, Vincent, Ann MacEachern, Jean Boyd and brothers and sisters-in law; Gussie MacDonald, Jackie Murphy, Ed Stribrny, Paulette DeYoung and Linda Murphy.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Hickey, Dr. Steeves and most recently to Dr. Simms and Dr. McNeil. Thank you for all your kindness and compassion towards Joe.

Visitation will be held Sunday January 14th from 2-6 pm in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held Monday January 15th at 11am in St. Ninian Cathedral, Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
