Obituary of Grace Gertrude Dort
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Grace Gertrude Dort (nee Wallace), who left us peacefully on August 4th, 2024, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish. Grace was born in 1945 in Merland to the late James Edward and Annie Teresa (nee Dailey) Wallace.
Grace was a cherished sibling among ten children and is lovingly remembered by her surviving sister, Kathleen Chisholm of Antigonish. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Marshall Dort, and her siblings James Vincent, William John, Raymond, Edmund, Helen Jean, Margaret, Mary Florence, and Marcella (in infancy).
In her early years, Grace was raised in Merland, later moving to Peas Brook after marrying James Dort. The couple was blessed with four devoted children: James of Chilliwack, BC; Pauline (Joe) Meagher of Grand Prairie, Alberta; Linda of Yarmouth; and Czerney (Angie) of Tracadie. Also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Each of them carries forward her legacy of kindness and strength.
Grace dedicated her life to caring for others, both as a caregiver to the elderly and as a beloved crosswalk guard, where she ensured the safety of countless young children in her community. Her warmth and affection extended to all the little ones as if they were her own, leaving a lasting impact on many lives.
The family extends a special thank you to all the staff at St. Martha's Regional Hospital for their professionalism and compassion during this difficult time.
A service to celebrate Grace's life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife, 5909 Highway 207 Seaforth, NS, B0J1N0. Grace's presence will be dearly missed but her spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those she touched.
