Obituary of Lucy Catherine MacDougall
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Lucy "Catherine" (MacGillivray) MacDougall, (Tootsie), of Antigonish/Halifax, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20th at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax, after a long and beautiful life. She was born in Antigonish to Dan and Mary MacGillivray and grew up in Maryvale.
She worked at Northern Electric in Montreal as a draftsperson for many years before she was married to the love of her life, Howard MacDougall. They settled in Antigonish where they raised five children and enjoyed 39 wonderful years together.
Mom showed us how to live life to the full. She was gentle, selfless, kind, and faithful. She was also strong, courageous and had energy that knew no bounds. She loved a good laugh. She was a dedicated mother to her five children, who thought the world of her, and a caring grandmother to her seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, who loved her dearly. She always said that motherhood was her greatest calling, and her children knew it. When she became a grandmother, she brought to it the same love and patience. She was also a loving sister and aunt to her many siblings, nieces and nephews, who would often stop by for tea, biscuits, wisdom and good cheer. She was a generous friend and neighbour.
She enjoyed spending time with family at the cottage at Doctor's Brook in the summer, especially with her sisters and brothers, and playing cards, including 45s and crib at the cottage, and bridge in town and in Halifax.
She was a dedicated volunteer in Antigonish, including serving on the executive of many groups, including St. Ninian's, the CWL, Girl Guides, Antigonish Highland Society, the Opportunity Shop, and many others. She loved learning, and took many courses over the years. When her beloved husband passed away she moved to Halifax to be closer to her children, and continued her commitment to volunteering at St. Mary's Basilica, and the Victoria General Hospital, where she received her 20 year service award.
She is survived by her children, Alexander "Sandy" (Anne), Donald, Anne Marie (Chuck Pilkington) and Cathy (Mike VandenHof), grandchildren, Warren (Emma), Jayne, Megan, Anneke, Colin, Caitrin and Erik, great grandchildren, Oscar and Everett, brother, Aubrey, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son, David, and siblings, Lawrence, Mary Jane, Alexander, Donald, Margaret, John, Geordie, Ray, and Theresa.
Visitation will take place on Friday October 21st at MacIsaac Funeral Home in Antigonish, from 7 to 9pm, and Funeral Mass in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish on Saturday at 11am. Rev. Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
The family would like to thank all of Mom's caregivers, including the special angels on Sullivan’s Lane at Parkstone.
