Obituary of Jean Elizabeth Gillis
Jean Elizabeth Gillis passed away peacefully at home in Clydesdale on August 24, 2015. Born in Antigonish on July 5, 1919; she was the daughter of the late Annie (Chisholm) and William Chisholm.
After graduating from Mt. St. Bernard College she attended the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro.
A gifted and enthusiastic educator, she taught in schools in Clydesdale, Pleasant Valley, Arisaig and McArris Brook.
After marrying in 1945; Jean; along with her husband refocused their attention to the family farm, and together raised their four children.
Jean was a member of St. Ninian’s CWL for over 60 years. She was a woman of strong faith and conviction which was demonstrated on many occasions over the years.
She is survived by her daughters Mary (John) Murphy, Clydesdale; Claire (Alphonse) Juurlink, Pomquet River; and son Hugh Vincent Gillis, Stellarton; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years Joseph Gillis; daughter Anne Cusack; sisters Mary Janet MacDonald, Alexina Chisholm; and brother John Joseph Chisholm.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 on Thursday August 27th, 2015. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ninian’s Cathedral on Friday August 28th, 2015 at 11 am with Reverend Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial following at the Parish Cemetery.
