Obituary of Owen Damien MacNeil

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Owen Damien MacNeil in Dartmouth General Hospital on August 28, 2023 after a brief illness.

Born in Antigonish on August 25, 1938, a son of the late Daniel A.J. and Anna H. (MacPhee) MacNeil, he grew up as part of the fourth generation on the family farm in Lanark. He made his career in education, teaching in schools in Antigonish and Guysborough counties, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and in Halifax County for the majority of his career. He conducted several trips for students to Europe, and formed many lasting friendships through his work as teacher and mentor.

Owen was interested in almost everything, including, but not limited to, art, genealogy, literature, music, film, travel, gardening, cooking, and painting. He will be remembered by his friends for his kindness, generosity, infectious humor, creativity, fair-mindedness, and ingenuity (he could fix most anything).

He is survived by brother Donald (Marilyn), Truro; beloved sister Margaret Ann (Dartmouth); sister-in-law Helen MacNeil (Toronto); grand-nephew Nathan MacNeil (New Zealand); nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by siblings, Jack, Ron, Arnold, Maurice; and James and Janette in early childhood.

Visitation inMacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish, on Monday, September 4th, from 7pm to 9pm. Funeral Mass Tuesday, September 5th in St. Ninian Cathedral at 11am Rev. Daniel MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Reception to follow at the John Paul Centre. Home garden or wild flower bouquets welcomed. Donations to community food banks.
