Rev. Stewart married us and baptized our kids in Pointe-Claire at Valois United Church where he was truly beloved. Even though we were not regular members of the church, he still welcomed us with open arms and some jokes. We were very happy to be married by someone whose values and personality were so open and friendly. Rest in peace, Rev. Doug.

Dear Joan and family,
The tears are flowing in Montreal as so many remember Doug's ministry, his passion for life, his attention to detail and beauty, and the gift of laughter that he shared. It was a wonderful priviledge to be both his friend and his colleague when he was at Valois United and then as part of the staff for the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church. He loved hosting our staff Christmas luncheons, making all his favorite seasonal foods with his home decorated as only Doug could do and when he left, I was gifted with his beautiful front door wreath which will hang again this year in his memory.
As I have phoned people, stories have been shared, and the memories are wonderful. I hope you will receive many more of them.
We missed him when he returned to Antigonish, but happy, knowing that he was able to enjoy his life back at home, surrounded by those of whom he spoke and showed pictures so often, and back doing the pastoral ministry that brought him such joy. May he rest in peace as he is remembered with love.

We had the good fortune to be congregants of Valois United Church during much of Rev. Doug's time there. He was an outstanding pastor - kind, empathetic, passionate, and wise, with a wickedly subtle sense of humour. We offer our sincere condolences to his family.

To the family of Reverend Douglas Stewart, my husband Joe, and I(Edna) offer our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy.
We are members of Valois United Church in Pointe Claire, Quebec where he served successfully and lovingly for many years.
For us, Reverend Doug, as we referred to him, was the greatest facilitator in the world because he was the greatest listener. During his tenure, both my parents, my mother-in-law, and then our youngest son, Andrew(age 31)passed away.
Reverend Doug had a decorum and sensitivity to
assist us in our religious journey, and to help us express what was in our hearts.
His gift of encouraging us to express ourselves in a religious way gave us strength, understanding, and acceptance. We are eternally grateful for his skillful and supportive approach to us.
At times, when my faith was challenged by life’s events, he would reassure me that one’s religious beliefs can take a lifetime to accept and is not always a middle of the road experience.
He truly was a “man of God” in all his endeavours.
May he Rest in Peace, and Rise to Glory.
Sincerely, Edna & Joe Schell

May I express my condolences to Doug's family, friends, and colleagues. Doug and I were at St. F.X. together, shared some classes, and volunteered in the Protestant Chaplain's office at that time. Doug was a real support during our time together there. It was great to have him as a class mate again a year later when he joined us at A.S.T. On one occasion Doug and I and a Roman Catholic student, who was also an alumni of St. F.X. , did a service together at St. Columba chapel at AST on the feast of St. Francis Xavier. Doug was a fine minister of word, sacrament and pastoral care for the United Church of Canada which he loved. With very fond memories, may he rest in peace and be raised in glory.

So very sorry to hear of your loss of Rev Doug. I loved seeing him around the hospital. He always had a ready smile and pleasant words.
Funny story. I was on a little mission around the hospital checking rooms for crucifixes as I had a pt asking why she didn’t have one in her room. We always had them in all rooms. Anyway, I met with Sr Catherine and Rev Doug and we were discussing this. I wondered if patients may have taken some home. All of a sudden Rev Doug spoke up and said he had to confess something. He was visiting with a patient one day and she told him how she so appreciated the crucifix in her room and felt it gave her great peace and comfort. She was discharged that day so Rev Doug gave her the crucifix to take home. I wonder how many times he may have done this. We had a good laugh about it.
I’m sure he will be greatly missed. Prayers to you all.

I knew Rev Doug from the West Island of Montreal when Valois United and Roxboro United would share ministers during the summer holidays.
He always had a story to tell in his
distinct manner and shared his love, compassion and faith with all!
When he retired and returned to Antigonish, what a pleasant surprise to see him again in our new retirement setting in Nova Scotia.
He was a blessing to all!

Our deepest condolences to all of Rev. Doug family. As members of Valois United Church we had the pleasure of passing many wonderful times with him. For many years he came to our house on Christmas Eve between the children service and the later one. He became a good friend and enjoyed seeing our children grow up. He was always so caring and had such a positive outlook on life. We can only guess how much he will be missed by all of you and the Antigonish community.

To the family of Doug I wish to extend sympathy and appreciation for having known him many years back. I was part of the United Church community at AST, Halifax, during his first year.
After I graduated two years ahead of him, I lost touch with him as we did not serve in any proximity.
Doug was a true representative of and a credit to the ministry profession; his sincerity and deep spirituality were impeccable. He must have touched many people affirmingly along the road of life.
To all his family and friends I honour his ministry and life.
Yours most sincerely,

Dear Joan and Family: I was so saddened to hear about Doug's death. I think the last few times I ran in to Doug was while visiting our mutual Aunt Gertie and he also dropped by. It was obvious Doug shared that big heart of hers as well as that natural ability to spontaneously create humour. I can't remember the specific stories (only the laughs) and know he certainly worked in concert with Gertie. She was so proud of him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you prepare to say good bye to Doug and celebrate his life.

I met Doug in 1969 or so when he was our neighbour in Lochaber. He was in HS and was a regular visitor at our home where we played endless games of Spades. He was having some difficulties with the admissions folks at St FX and I arranged a meeting for him with Msgnr Malcolm MacDonnell (then Dean of Arts) who expedited his admission. Doug excelled as a student and had a big part in University life. I used to tease him when he went into the Seminary that he would be one of a select group of United Church clergymen with an X ring! He was a great person and I dropped in to the Hospital Chaplaincy office to see him from time to time. He is well remember and I offer our condolences to his family and friends. Stuart & Nary Beaton. Dear Joan-and members of your family and to the Members of St.James and the people of Merigomish United Church,
Joan your loss and that of your family is immense, his presence in your life has changed "but not ended" he will always be with you. You were all very important to him, the time he spent with each of you was always a gift. Being home and getting to spend the time with each of you was a true gift.
To the people of St. James and Merigomish United Church, you were very important to him. He certainly was happy to be with you and to be of service. His time with you enriched his life.
Our loss at St. Martha's is very big, his presence is missed. Losing him was hard enough but for our staff to be able to take care of him was like looking after family. He gave a lot of himself and we received the best kind of care back from him. Both personlly and professionally I will miss him, the gift he gave to my life and to My Mother, was something I will never forget.
Be At Rest "Your good deeds go with you"
