It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Reverend Douglas Stewart, who entered eternal rest on October 22, 2024.

Doug graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigionish with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976.  In 1979, he graduated from the Atlantic School of Theology with a Master of Divinity and was ordained by the Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada.

Doug began his journey with the United Church of Canada in High Level, Alberta, before continuing to Shawinigan, Quebec, and then to Montreal, where he was a minister at Valois United Church for many years. He then went on to serve as a Personnel Minister within the Montreal-Ottawa Conference.

At retirement, Doug made the decision to move back home to Antigonish to be closer to his family. His passion for helping others continued as he became a Chaplain at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and assisted with worship services at St. James United Church and Merigomish United Church. Doug found his happiness in practicing his faith and being close to his loved ones.

His passing leaves an empty void in our family, being incredibly missed by us all as we find peace in the loving memory of who he was. Remembering our loved brother, uncle, and friend, Doug spread light and happiness to all who knew him, and to all who were blessed enough to call him family: His sister Joan, Antigonish, half-brothers Dennis (Cindy),St. Andrews, and Darryl, Montreal. His brother-in-law Lloyd Bethune, Antigonish, his nephews; Wayne (Jennifer), Clydesdale, Mark (Chantel), Pomquet, and Brent (Susan), Lochaber. And his great nieces and nephews, Lily, Reaghan, Rowen, Duncan, and Luke. Many cousins, too numerous to mention by name but all held a special place in his heart.

Doug was  predeceased by his parents Helen (MacDonald) and Roy Stewart and his sister Marguerite Bethune.

Doug wished to be cremated and we honored his wishes. Visitation will be held in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish, on Sunday  October 27th from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm. The funeral service will be held in St. James United Church, 197 Main Street, Antigonish, on Monday October 28th at 2:00pm with the Rev. Peter Smith officiating.  Burial to follow at a later date.

Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to The Palliative Care Unit of St Martha’s Regional Hospital or St James United Church, Antigonish.

A special thank you to St Martha’s Regional Hospital staff for the wonderful treatment you showed Doug with the utmost respect given to him. To the Palliative care team, who held a special place in his heart, you made his final days peaceful and comfortable.
